"Does Xenobeast blood carry viruses?" Lucas stared at his arm, which was still speckled with monster blood, muttering to himself. Just thinking about the attack made his stomach do a flip. "Anyone who got splattered, go with Dr. Quinn. You need to get checked out at the hospital," Hannah announced from the classroom door, after whispering with a man in a white coat. Lucas and five other students stood up and shuffled toward the door. "Follow me," Dr. Quinn said, giving Lucas and the crew a quick once-over before leading them out to a waiting medical transport. "Lucas... you think we're gonna be okay?" Tom asked, his voice shaking. He'd been standing right next to Lucas during the chaos and had gotten sprayed too. "I don't know," Lucas admitted, shaking his head. Biology textbooks said Xenobeast blood could carry pathogens. The chances were low, but not zero. The ride to Lenley General Hospital was a blur. They went through a battery of tests, and then came the worst part: the waiting game. Lucas kept his face blank, trying to look calm, but Tom and the others were practically vibrating with nerves. Finally, Dr. Quinn returned, peeling off his mask with a smile. "Results are in. You're all clean. No infections." The tension in the room snapped. Tom let out a huge sigh. "Whoa, hey! Did you guys see this? They checked our Origin Points, too. I'm up to a 7!" Tom yelled, staring at his chart in disbelief. The other students checked their papers and groaned. Their stats hadn't budged. "What about you, Lucas?" Tom asked, grinning. Suddenly, everyone's eyes were glued to Lucas. The rumor that he'd taken an Origin Elixir had been circulating around class all day. They were dying to know if it worked. "Looks like... I'm at a 13," Lucas said, flashing a casual smile. Ping. Ping. Ping. A series of translucent notifications popped up in his vision: [Surprise from Sean Shaw: Credits +5] [Surprise from Tom: Credits +5] [Surprise from Hugh Nolan: Credits +5] [Surprise from Sophie Sutton: Credits +5] [Shock from Chad Turner: Credits +10] Lucas was used to the text floating in his eyes, but the last line caught his attention. 'Shock' gave double the points of 'Surprise'? Nice. He glanced over at Chad, the chubby kid in the corner. Chad's beady eyes were wide open, and his jaw was practically on the floor. The kid was genuinely shook. "Man," Tom sighed, shaking his head. "That Origin Elixir is the real deal. Makes me want to go buy one myself. The other students nodded eagerly. It made sense. Lucas had jumped from a measly 5 Origin Points to a solid 13. That was more than double his original power level. "Is everyone okay?" A tall, hulking man in a black uniform approached them. Lucas felt his pupils constrict. He recognized this guy. Just moments ago, Lucas had watched him slice that Xenobeast in half with a single strike. This was a real-deal Martial Warrior. He carried a long blade on his back. Even though it was sheathed, just looking at it gave Lucas chills. "That's Wolfe from the SWAT Strike Team..." Tom whispered, clearly awe-struck. Sean and the others stared, too. They'd only ever seen Wolfe on the news. Seeing him up close? That was a whole different level of cool. "Sorry about the scare, kids," Wolfe said, walking over after a brief chat with Dr. Quinn. He didn't look like the kind of guy who smiled often. When he tried to force one now, it looked like a bear trying to be friendly—slightly terrifying and definitely weird. "We're fine, we're fine," Tom and the others stammered, shaking their heads rapidly. "I checked your medical reports. You're good," Wolfe assured them. "The Xenobeast blood isn't infectious and carries no viruses. Just wash it off and you'll be fine. By the way, which one of you is Lucas?" Wolfe scanned the group. Naturally, everyone's eyes snapped to Lucas. Lucas nodded, confused. "That's me." Why was a heavyweight like Wolfe looking for him? "Report says you recently took an Origin Elixir?" Wolfe asked, locking eyes with him. There was no hiding it. The blood test would have picked up the residue immediately. "You aiming to become a Martial Warrior?" Wolfe asked, his voice surprisingly gentle. Origin Elixirs weren't cheap. Lucas didn't look like some rich trust-fund kid. No one burned that kind of cash unless they were serious about the path. Lucas nodded again, his expression hardening. "Yes." "Your Origin Points are at 13. The elixir is still active in your system, so you'll probably hit 14 soon," Wolfe said. "You've got a year left. If you hustle, you might actually have a shot at the Warrior Academy." Wolfe grinned again. He probably didn't realize how ugly that forced smile was. Truth was, he was feeling the heat from his superiors for letting the Xenobeast get so close to the school. Being nice to the kids was damage control. "I've got a bunch of old textbooks and notes from when I was studying for the exams," Wolfe offered, looking at the determination in Lucas's eyes. It reminded him of his younger self. "If you need them, just ask." "Can I get them now?" Lucas blurted out, his eyes lighting up. Wolfe blinked. He was mostly just being polite, making a generic offer. He hadn't expected Lucas to actually take him up on it immediately. "Uh... sure," Wolfe said, a bit awkwardly. He'd already offered; he couldn't back out now. Tom and the others looked like they were going to die of jealousy. Those were study notes from a legitimate SWAT officer! Lucas checked his internal System interface. The 'Envy Credits' from Tom and the gang were rolling in. Cha-ching. Sometimes, you just had to be shameless to get ahead. "Let's go, then. The rest of you, take a breather and head home. I'll clear it with your homeroom teacher," Wolfe told the group. Leaving the envious stares behind, Lucas followed Wolfe. Wolfe's place wasn't far, just a short walk to a nearby apartment complex. "This is the stuff I used back in the day. A bit outdated, but the basics are solid," Wolfe said, rummaging through some boxes before dumping a heavy stack of dusty books and notebooks onto a table. It looked like they hadn't seen the light of day in years. "Thanks, Wolfe." Lucas meant it. As someone who had just transmigrated into this world, he needed all the help he could get. "Don't mention it. If they don't help, you can always pass them on to someone else," Wolfe said bluntly. Lucas felt a metaphorical bead of sweat drop down his forehead. Wow, way to have faith in me, guy. "Hey, Wolfe, could you teach me the basic footwork for Martial Warriors?" Lucas asked, pushing his luck. "I've already got the Stance Training down." To prove it, Lucas dropped into a perfect Foundation Stance right there in the living room. Wolfe started to smirk, expecting the kid to wobble. But the smirk vanished instantly. Lucas's stance was rock solid. He looked rooted to the floor, immovable as an old oak tree. "How long have you been practicing this?" Wolfe asked, stunned.
