Wedding Queen
Only she remembered what happened on her wedding. It was nothing like you might think. The morning seemed normal other then her nerves were on edge and it was her important day. She was getting married. Her friends and her brides maid were all excited for her and nurturing her in excess. They were doing their best to make her special day as special as they could. She was thankful she had friends that cared about her as much as they did.
The day was a perfect wedding, before and after the unexpected event. Her wedding team stripped her down to get ready with her wedding dress and everything. They had already done up her makeup and it was time to put everything else on and get ready. Her nerves tingled, she was sure it was just her excitement, she had dreamed about this moment for years. He was her perfect partner and life was going to be wonderful. The tingling grew more intense.
The world around her changed. Suddenly she was in a forest barefoot and in her underwear. The lady in front of her with the slightly pointed ears gestured and she was instantly clothed in a golden silk dress. It was her wedding day, she must have passed out. Carrol looked around, but there was nothing familiar and nothing she could draw on as created by her own memories. The ground was soft, she looked down and she was standing on a bed of moss, lush, thick, and bright green.
Everything around her had a touch too much color, a sense of magic that she could feel running through her. The woman in front of her had dressed her with a casual gesture. The pointed ears, and the elegant outfit suggested authority and power. Carrol found that she could see and feel the magic around her and identify the items that contained that magic. “Where am I? I am supposed to be getting ready for my wedding.”
“I am Elyanna. You are in Nethyria, the land that is truly yours. We will have you back to the moment you left, worry not.”
“Why am I here, and why now?” Carrol was concerned about being late for her wedding.
“Stop fretting, I said we would have you back to the moment you left.” Elyanna smiled. “Today is the day you first meet your people, you are expected. They have gathered in the yard.”
“The yard?” Carrol looked around, it was not like they were in a building.
“Yes.” Elyanna turned, “Follow me.” She walked through an archway of flowering vines.
There was a shimmering sensation as she walked though and she found herself on a balcony looking over a large open area filled with a few thousand people. They were a distance away, but they seemed to all be wearing rather formal attire. Instinctively she waved to the audience. “I am normally shy in front of people.”
“These are your people.” she stepped to the edge of the balcony and announced, “This is Carrol whom we have read would be making her first visit this day. She will part, and return again to be your new leader as has been promised. Please say a few words to your people.”
Carrol hesitated, “I am supposed to be their leader? I know nothing about this place.”
“Just say hello and let your instincts guide you.” Elyanna replied.
Carrol turned to the crowed. “Hello, it is a pleasure to meet you. When I return I hope I can be all you desire of me. I am young and still learning perhaps time will give me wisdom and experience to be my best.” She stepped back but the crowd cheered and applauded.
“Well done dear.” Elyanna waved to the crowd and turned back the way they came. “Because you have chosen to get married, we will give you fifty years on earth, at which time we will take you away and restore your youth and agelessness as the leader of your elven kingdom.”
“Are you an immortal, or some kind of deity here?” Carrol asked.
“I have not lived forever yet, so I can not know if I am immortal.” Elyanna laughed. “I have power and the respect of the people, some might call me a deity, but I am just who I am.”
“I do not know this world, this land or these people you call mine.” Carrol protested.
“You have fifty years to learn, and I will teach you in your sleep.” Elyanna replied.
“How can dreams teach me the wisdom and knowledge I need to run a kingdom?” Carrol was concerned for the people.
“First your dreams will feel like a reality and respond like a reality. Second we will make sure you prosper enough in life that you can also learn from your world experience and have security in your married life.” Elyanna seemed to examine her closely. “You do indeed have a heart for your people already, I have great confidence in you.”
“My wedding?” Carrol asked.
“Yes, right away. We will talk more in your dreams.” Elyanna smiled. With a gesture Elyanna had Carrol back with her wedding party exactly as she had left.
Carrol was lost in thought for a few moments, was she really going to be a queen? This had to be a nervous thing. Howard her husband would treat her as a queen.
The wedding was glorious, but the dream came as promised when she fell asleep and every night when she slept after that. Her life was charmed and they went from their common life to great wealth. They were now living in their fifth luxurious home with five children. Carrol never told Howard about the experience, or her dreams. The were like stepping into an different reality and her knowledge and experience grew in both worlds. She even discovered some of the magic she had in her dreams seemed to overlap her life with Howard.
They were in their seventies now. She loved Howard, and decided it was time to tell him her time was limited before she had to go. Only she remembered what happened on her wedding. It was time fore her to share this with her husband.
“I know Carrol, Elyanna visited me years back. I am ready.” Howard smiled. “There is actually comfort in knowing you are moving on and not facing our human mortality.”
Carrol felt relief knowing he already knew and was prepared for her eventual departure although it was still a year away.
